Skyping with Yellowstone National Park

So for science this week we have been learning about land forms! The kids have blown me away with their interest in this topic...especially the volcanoes! Yesterday we Skyped with Ranger Mike from Yellowstone National Park...
He talked about all the landforms found in Yellowstone and showed us lots of cool pictures!!!!
The kids loved hearing about the volcanoes under the hot springs!
They asked some amazing questions...like..."how are hills formed?"
"Does the lava inside the volcano get cold when it is snowing?" "How are rocks formed?" "How hot is the lava?" "Can you swim in the hot springs?"
Seriously??? I love these kids and their brilliant thinking! Ranger Mike was super awesome at explaining the answers to these questions in kid friendly language!

Crazy hair day

This week is spirit week at our school! We are raising money and getting ready for our Fundrun next week! The PTO at our school has done a fabulous job organizing events at recess for the kids to play and excercise! Crazy hair day was a huge hit...check out these rockstars!
This is Lauren...she stopped by for a hairdo too!

Corn Fusion Fun!

ISo I'm a little behind on our blog :/  but on October 13th we had an awesome field trip to Sykes and Cooper Corn Maze in Elkton!
Check out these corn cuties!

Here is our awesome field trip director and head honcho Rachel telling the kids all about the activities they get to do on the farm...
Our first stop was the corn pit!
These little hams are cheesing it up before they get on the slide!
Next stop...CORN MAZE!
This year we read "Jack and the Corn Stalk" as we made our way through the maze! It was a super cute book with a corn twist :)
These kids were "STARVING" so our next stop was lunch at the picnic tables...
Next stop...ANIMALS
This is Miss Piggy...I lover her!!!
Next we got to ride on the tractor around the pumpkin patch...we didn't see very many pumpkins but the weather was gorgeous!
Are these kids cute or what?!?
Well...kinda ;)
Our last stop was the corn popper! This is always the kid's favorite part of the farm!
It's always MY favorite too!

Chuck the chart

Check out this post....I love it! Exactly why we will be cutting off the bottom of our chart and maybe even chucking it out completely!!!!!

Science enrichment

Today was our first day of science enrichment in first grade! Our kids start in our classroom and do an experiment and then go to another first grade classroom for a different experiment!
We learned about different liquid densities in room 212! The kids started with an empty cup and then poured a mysterious green liquid into the cup.
Then they had to predict what would happen if we poured the mysterious yellow liquid into the cup with the green liquid.
They were amazed the that yellow liquid stayed on top of the green liquid!
They drew their predictions and observations in their science journals...
The next part of our experiment was the brown liquid! They were passing it around carefully observing using their senses to figure out what was in that cup!
They had to predict what would happen when they poured the brown liquid into the cup...they did a great job making valid predictions that the brown liquid would sit on top of the yellow liquid!
Aren't they just sooooo cute?
Table 2 had fun trying to figure out that brown liquid...maybe because it was syrup!
Aidan is taking his observations very seriously! I totally tricked them :) The brown liquid sank to the bottom of the cup! We learned that some liquids can be heavy and some can be light!
