So I LOVE to use Skype in the classroom! It is a wonderful interactive resource that really engages students in science and social studies! Our first Skype session of the year was with a Yellowstone National Park ranger! Before starting our session we reviewed and practiced my expectations for Skyping.
Since we are learning about landforms and rocks in science we brainstormed a list of questions we had before talking with the park ranger so that the students would be cool, calm and comfortable when it was their turn to ask a question!
Meet Ranger Brian! He was super helpful and the kids LOVED listening to him talk!
Here Ranger Brian is showing the kids how Native Americans used igneous rocks to make arrow heads!
The kids all had a turn asking his a question about landforms or rocks! He was blown away by there vocabulary and the depth of their wonderings...so was I!!!!
Wren's question was "Do canyons have waterfalls?" below he is showing her the biggest waterfall in Yellowstone National Park is actually coming from a canyon!
Tyce asked: "How many kinds of rocks are there in the world?"
His answer: WOW I don't know hundreds, thousands...the three main rock groups in Yellowstone are
igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary.
Morgan asked "How do animals live in Yellowstone Park without being eaten by predators?"
His answer: He is showing her an animal skull where the eyes are on the side of the animals head so that some animals can see when a predator is coming. Other animals are really fast! The circle of life means that some animals will get eaten. (She didn't really care for that last part!)
Aaron asked: "How do Landforms grow?"
His answer: He is showing Aaron with his hands that as pieces of land moves closer together it pushes against each other and builds up.
Parker asked: "How do bears survive?"
His answer: They hibernate for the winter because of the snow...and they eat a LOT before hibernation so their body will stay warm.
Kijuan asked: What is Yellowstones biggest rock?
I can't remember the name but Kijuan's face is priceless! He showed him a picture of the rock! IT WAS HUGE!
Ethan asked: "How big is Yellowstone's tallest landform?"
His answer: Yellowstone is actually located on top of a giant Volcano!
