Sweet Science

Today we read this great book Mr. Peadbody's Apples by Madonna! It is a beautifully written and illustrated story about a boy who believes a rumor and spreads unkind words about a man named Mr. Peabody stealing apples from the local produce. Mr. Peabody corrects the boy and then teaches him a lesson by asking him to cut open his pillow and let all the feathers fly away. Then Mr. Peabody asks the boy to gather them all and put them back into the pillow just as they were...which the boy responds is an impossible task. We learned that unkind words cannot be taken back. We did our own experiment with unkind words and actions! I asked the kids to squeeze all the toothpaste out of their tubes. This represents unkind words or actions we might use on our friends or peers. THEN they had to figure out a way to get it ALL back in...IMPOSSIBLE! Hopefully the lesson stuck ;)
