Math games

In first grade we play A LOT of games during math! It gives these darlings a fun and hands on way to practice their math skills!

One if the games we are playing is called "collect 20". This game helps the students practice filling up ten frames, add on, count, roll dice appropriately, take turns, be happy losers, and understand the general concept of addition!
Aren't they just awesome?

Labeling the library

Today in Readers Workshop we looked through our book baskets around the room so that we could starting getting familiar with the books available in our classroom! Each kid was responsible for looking through one basket and deciding what the common theme was for the basket. Then they got to create a name for their basket...

They did such a great job today!!!

Weekly Update 8-25-15

Monday-Reading logs came home today in your child’s Rock STAR binder! They picked out a book to bring home and read. Please be sure to read your homework paper (the blue paper)! It is all about builder a reader at home with your child! For first grade we ask that your child spends 10 minutes a night reading with you! In reading this week we are focusing on decoding strategies to help us sound out and read words that are tricky! So far we have talked about Eagle Eye…he has excellent eye sight and can help readers look at the pictures carefully to figure out a word they don’t know. Today we learned about Stretchy the Snake! Stretchy the Snake helps readers by sounding out each sound and then putting all of the sounds together to make a word! Ask your darling firstie if they can tell you about our special friends! Please be sure to have your child fill out their reading log after they read their book so that you can sign it! The reading log should stay in their binder and return to school each morning :)

Tuesday-Spelling words will be coming home! Do not panic  We will spend this week reviewing “short a” words and practicing some high frequency words. The words start out simple and progress as the year goes on…however these are words we expect them to spell correctly in their everyday writing…not just on the test! The first test (this Friday) will be a practice test!
Here are the words we will be working on…10 words total!

Short a Words
 1. at
2. bag
3. can
4. ham
5. sad

High Frequency
1. Was
2. Have
3. From
4. But
5. What

Friday-Our first spelling test! Don’t worry we will practice our words in class this week!

Curriculum Chat Reminder- September 8th @6:00 we will have k-2 curriculum chat! PLEASE try to make it to this event! It will provide you with a lot of information about first grade and we will be setting your child’s device up on the student WiFi if you are planning on letting your child bring a device to school.

I hope you guys are enjoying first grade so far! We had a fantastic first week of school! We have a super sweet bunch!

Skyping with Howard B. Wigglebottom

Today we Skyped with Howard, an author from the "We do Listen Foundation". We learned how to be good listeners!
Howard B. Wigglebottom is a character in his books that learns to listen!
We got to watch Howard B. Wigglebottom's T.V. show and dance to the listening song! He told all about how he gets his ideas and writes his books!
Then we got to ask the Author lots of questions!
I am so proud of these awesome kiddos! On the third day of first grade they were fantastic listeners and learners!

Cullen

Today our leader of the day was Cullen! We learned all about this super sweet boy!
Cullen requested we read his poster with our singing voices!!! I'm sure the class next door really appreciated it :)
Cullen worked diligently on his leader crown while the rest of the class worked on his book!
Cullen was a great leader today!!!

Today Greta was our leader of the day! She shared her all about me poster with the class and then we asked her lots of questions!
We wrote everything we learned about Greta on chart paper and Greta led the class in a shared read aloud all about her!
We used robot voices and country voices...these kids have some twang!
Next each kid wrote something they learned about Greta and illustrated a picture to match! We made a book for our new friend Greta.

She decorated her leader crown to wear around school!

First Day Jitters

We read one of my favorite books for the first week of school First Day Jitters by: Julie Danneburg
We drank some yummy jitter juice to help us not be nervous on our first day of first grade...Some of us liked it...and some not so much!

Here is our data...
At first there was only a "yes" or "no" category...but little Miss Kimber said we needed a "in the middle" category! I thought that was a brilliant idea! Sometimes you just don't love it...but you don't hate it either!
