100 cups to build towers? AWESOME!

100 SNACKS!?! Oh yes!!

Sweet Science

Today we read this great book Mr. Peadbody's Apples by Madonna! It is a beautifully written and illustrated story about a boy who believes a rumor and spreads unkind words about a man named Mr. Peabody stealing apples from the local produce. Mr. Peabody corrects the boy and then teaches him a lesson by asking him to cut open his pillow and let all the feathers fly away. Then Mr. Peabody asks the boy to gather them all and put them back into the pillow just as they were...which the boy responds is an impossible task. We learned that unkind words cannot be taken back. We did our own experiment with unkind words and actions! I asked the kids to squeeze all the toothpaste out of their tubes. This represents unkind words or actions we might use on our friends or peers. THEN they had to figure out a way to get it ALL back in...IMPOSSIBLE! Hopefully the lesson stuck ;)

3 act Math

3 Act math is a FABULOUS problem solving framework! It's called 3 act Math because there are 3 phases...first we HOOK our mathematicians with a video or picture presenting a problem, then we ask them what information we know, or  need to solve the problem, finally we send them off with minimal information and let them think through the problem and how they are going to solve it! This problem was about a cookie monster! If you want to watch the HOOK video here it is...

We come together at the end and share out our strategies! They are recorded on chart paper so the kiddos can reference their awesomeness or their peers awesomeness for later problems! They LOVE to be the teachers! It helps keep them engaged to listen to their peers and gives them the opportunity to lead a discussion and explain their thinking!
