Field day

Field day! I love it! Our new P.E. coach did a fabulous job of setting up stations this year for the kids! We had lots of laughs and a few falls :)

Marshmallow Challenge

One of our main focuses this year is building a growth mindset! Stem challenges are such a fun way for students to practice failing and not giving while working with a partner doing something fun! We are building social emotional skills by encouraging respectful conversation to communicate ideas and problem solve.

The Challenge: Build the tallest free standing tower that will hold a large marshmallow.
Materials: 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 meter of tape and 1 large marshmallow
The first step in our stem projects is observing their materials, sketching out ideas and then communicating their plans with a partner!
The thing I loved most about this project is that on everyone's first try...nobody was successful! Students were frustrated that we were out of time and nobody was able to complete the challenge. It made for GREAT conversation about what they thought was going wrong, what they learned and how they would fix it next time...so the next day they got another go and everyone was successful!

Float your boat challenge

We are working on building and instilling a growth mindset this year! One of the most fun ways to do this is through stem activities in science! Students are given a challenge, limited materials and a lot of time to fail, try again, brainstorm ideas, and learn from their peers success!

The Challenge: Build a boat that will hold the weight of 50 pennies for at least 30 seconds.
Materials: Tinfoil

There were lots of successes and failures today! We are learning to try new ideas and not give up...sometimes finding inspiration from other people helps up become successful as well :)
