Math Games

Math is all about having fun while learning! In first grade we play a LOT of games! Of course we do learning too :) This week we learned how to play the game Compare! It is a lot like the card game War with a few tweaks! This is an excellent game to support number sense! As the year goes on we will learn other versions of this game to make it more challenging! Right now we are working on building our number sense and how to play a math game with a buddy.

Spelling

Today we started our spelling activities during word work. I am super proud of these kiddos! They each had a white board and marker, beginning sounds and word family ticket to use while they brainstormed -ad words! I LOVE watching them carefully blend the sounds together making words! They each made their own list of words and then we made a class list. We will continue to add to this list throughout the week! Our goal in first grade is to really teach the phonics of reading and writing! I want these firsties to feel confident when they are sounding out words in their books and when they are writing words they aren't really sure how to spell in their journals! 

Leader of the Day

The first few weeks of First Grade is all about getting to know our new friends! Each day we interview a new kiddo! We ask them questions about their favorite things to do, eat, read, and about their family! Each Leader of the Day gets a crown, a book with a picture from each of their classmates, and to be the leader of our morning meeting time! Here are our leaders so far...
